Superintelligent AI: What Is Superintelligent AI And Is Superintelligent AI Possible?

It’s no secret that artificial intelligence is advancing at an incredible rate. As it continues to advance, many experts predict that we will see the creation of a superintelligent AI. With that being said, what is super intelligent AI and is it possible? Let's find out.

What Is Superintelligent AI?

Simply put, superintelligent AI is a hypothetical AI that is much smarter than human intelligence. You might wonder how a machine can be smarter than us, but the truth is that there are many AI systems that are currently much smarter than humans at specific tasks.

For example, IBM’s Deep Blue chess computer was able to dethrone chess champion, Garry Kasparov, in 1997. Google DeepMind's AlphaGo program beat world champion Lee Sedol of South Korea in 2016.

Current AI programs are smarter than us only in certain areas, such as mental games, arithmetic, memorization, and heavy lifting. However, a superintelligent AI is something that can outperform the best human experts in practically every field, including scientific creativity, general wisdom and social skills.

Is Superintelligent AI Possible?

Today, many experts believe that the creation of superintelligent Artificial Intelligence is a realistic possibility. A number of AI researchers including Ray Kurzweil, Nick Bostrom and Max Tegmark, all argue that the creation of a super intelligent AI is inevitable.

According to Max Tegmark, to create a superintelligent AI, first, we need to build a human-level AGI (ability to accomplish any cognitive task at least as well as humans), then use this AGI to create superintelligence.

When we achieve human-level artificial intelligence, then the resulting AGI would be able to recursively design even better AGI, ultimately reaching a superhuman intelligence. And then, the technological singularity will begin.
