VR continues to go from strength to strength as a gaming platform, and our list of upcoming VR games shows that the number of high-quality games is only going to grow in the coming months.

We've put together a guide to the most hotly-anticipated VR games that are expected to be released in the coming months. There's plenty to look forward to, no matter what platform you prefer to use for your virtual reality experience.

Now, without further ado, here are the best upcoming VR games.

Upcoming VR games to look out for

All the games that follow have been confirmed, some have a release date already, while others are slightly more uncertain. But regardless of this, these are some of the VR games we think you should be saving your pennies for in the coming months.

The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Chapter 2: Retribution

The sequel to an already popular game, The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Chapter 2: Retribution may not win any awards for the brevity of its title, but it looks set to continue where its predecessor left off.

Players will explore an unknown territory and come up against a new enemy known as the Axeman. Threats from the Tower remain very real, and players will have to continue making a variety of choices as they continue their journey. Will you help the Exiles by completing their tasks? Or take their resources by force?

The game is due for release on Quest on December 1st, 2022. It's also due to find its way to PSVR 2 at some stage in 2023.

Colossal Cave

Colossal Cave started life as a text-based adventure game in 1975 by Will Crowther and Don Woods. This fully immersive, 3D VR experience is being developed by developers Ken and Roberta Williams, two titans of the industry, known for games such as King's Quest, Phantasmagoria and Black Cauldron.

Players will explore a vast cave complex, in order to find the treasure hidden inside. You'll have puzzles to complete, and encounter a variety of characters, some friendly, some...not.

The game is due for release in "Fall 2022". But there is no more detail than that at this stage. Hopefully, it will arrive soon.

What the Bat?

Described as a "surprising VR comedy" by the developers, What the Bat? sees players complete a series of mini-games. Oh, and you also have baseball bats for hands.

Brought to you by the team behind the popular What the Golf? game, if you want silly, slapstick humour from a game that doesn't take itself seriously, then this step into the VR world will suit you.

The game is due for release on November 17th 2022 on Steam VR and Quest 2.

Ghostbusters VR: Rise of the Ghost Lord

Who wouldn't fancy the idea of being an actual Ghostbuster - especially in VR? In Ghostbusters VR, players are tasked with running a new Ghostbusters HQ in San Francisco, as you strive to solve a mystery.

You'll also have the option of playing in co-op mode with up to three friends, as you try to defeat the Ghost Lord.

Ghostbusters is due to be released on Quest 2 and PSVR 2 in 2023.

Horizon: Call of the Mountain

Next on our list of upcoming VR games takes us into the world of Horizon. Initially teased as part of the announcement of PSVR 2, Horizon: Call of the Mountain is sure to be one of the most hotly-anticipated releases on the new VR platform when it arrives in 2023.

You'll play as an entirely new character in the Horizon world, experiencing a standalone adventure that is expected to last upwards of seven hours. And as a game designed specifically to make use of the features of PSVR 2 in conjunction with the PS5.

We don't yet have a confirmed release date for Call of the Mountain. But the PSVR 2 headset is due for release on 22nd February 2023. So if this isn't released as a launch day title, we'd hope that it will come soon after.

Propagation: Paradise Hotel

The original Propagation VR was released back in 2020, and proved to be something of a hit. The sequel, Paradise Hotel, promises to deliver more of the same blood-curdling, spine-tingling horror.

Release across Vr platforms was originally expected at the end of 2022. But this has been pushed back now to Spring 2023. Hopefully, for fans of horror games, it will prove to be worth the wait.

Firmament

Firmament has been in development since as long ago as 2018, and has been funded in no small part by a Kickstarter campaign. Made by Cyan Worlds, the developers behind other hits such as Myst, Riven and Obduction, Firmament is a Steampunk narrative adventure game.

Players will explore a mysterious landscape, with the "ever-present assistance of a helpful clockwork adjunct". Everything you do leads toward a mysterious event known as The Arrival.

The latest news, posted on November 8th, is that Firmament is expected to release in Q1 of 2023, and will be playable on Rift, Vive, Index, and PSVR 2, as well as more traditional gaming formats.

LOW-FI

Another game that benefitted from a Kickstarter campaign, LOW-FI is specifically designed for VR, and is described as "more akin to a holodeck program than a traditional game". It's a non-linear open-world, where you as the player have total control over what you choose to get up to.

You play as a police officer who has been transferred to a particularly seedy part of the city. You are described as "low-fi" a street name given to people who are unable to merge with the AI singularity where most of the population now live their lives.

It certainly has huge potential, if it can live up to these claims. We'll find out when the game is finally released, although a release date remains tbc.

VR Giants

VR Giants is a game that promises to introduce a whole new style of co-op gameplay into VR. As a local co-op game, one player uses a gamepad while the other is in VR, and the two must work together to complete each level. The player in VR is the giant, and needs to help the gamepad player, who plays as a dwarf.

It certainly has the potential to be both extremely creative, and a lot of fun. But with no release date confirmed yet, we may be waiting until well into 2023 before we get the chance to see the finished product. If you can't wait that long, then a Beta version is available for you to try.

Pirates VR: Jolly Roger

Is a Pirate's life for you? If so, then Pirates VR may be perfect for you. You'll start life on a deserted island, filled with secrets, traps and puzzles to be solved.

You'll even have a parrot companion as you explore. It looks set to be a huge game, with jungles, cliffs, sub-oceanic exploration, and Zombies and ghosts to deal with.

Once again, there isn't a confirmed release date. But it is expected to arrive in Q1 2023.

There are, of course, plenty of other VR games to look forward to in the coming weeks and months. These are just a handful of the most anticipated upcoming VR games to look forward to. As we said earlier, it shows that VR games look set to continue providing new and intriguing gameplay experiences.
