The Total War games are absolute powerhouses in the world of strategy gaming.
If you like to have a good old think before everything you do and you've not checked the series out, then you're doing yourself a massive disservice and should try and rectify that as soon as possible.
You might be hesitant to give the series a go if you've not got much money though and you're not 100% sold on it.
In that case, you need to know whether or not there are any free Total War games.
Are there any free-to-play games in the Total War franchise?
The simple answer is not all the time.
The less simple answer is that sometimes there are and sometimes there aren't.
You see Total War: Troy launched as a free game on the Epic Store but that only lasted for a short while, and generally, that's not how the games launch.
They can occasionally be found for free on certain weekends too, and maybe they'll appear as the free games on the Epic Store at some point as well. However, there is actually going to be a free-to-play Total War game coming, but it might not be what you're expecting.

Introducing Total War: Elysium
Total War: Elysium is a game "that brings generals from across history together to go head to head in epic strategic showdowns."
Think of it as the best of album for the characters in the series, and it's a potentially great way to meet some of the generals from the other games.
Also, while it is still a strategic game, it's actually a free-to-play card game, which makes it a very different direction for the series, but one that could introduce it to hordes of new fans.
