Total War: Arena download: How to play the resurrected game through NetEase partnership

Fans of Total War: Arena rejoice; it lives again! But in China.

Ever since the game closed down in February of 2019, fans have been clamouring for a return to the title. It was a surprise to many in how well it played, and to see it shut down after a year caused some dismay across the community.

However, it was another surprise when it suddenly relaunched in September of this year, but only in China.

In partnership with ā€˜NetEaseā€™, Creative Assembly have been working to include some new settings for this version too. But there is also a way that can allow you to play it in your own home as lockdown 2 begins.

Some Context..

Almost four years ago, Wargaming, SEGA and Creative Assembly announced a partnership to develop a free-to-play title from the Total War series.

This turned out to be Total War: Arena, a free-to-play title that launched in February of 2018. It received positive reviews, so it was a shame when it was shut down after a short period.

It featured two gameplay modes, with fourteen commanders in-game across four factions that can be unlocked over time or through in-game-purchases.

With players having to battle through 10 tiers of units, it was an addictive game, and praise was lavished on its design mechanics. But now with it seeing a re-release in China, players have been able to find a way of accessing it out of China.

How to Play it

When Total War: Arena is downloaded and installed into your PC, follow these steps:

  • Go to the ā€˜Dataā€™ folder
  • Find a file named ā€˜local_cn,packā€™
  • Now change the name of the pack to your desired language.

Thatā€™s it. You will then be able to play the game in a language that you prefer, while being able to play through the eras between ā€˜Hellenisticā€™ to ā€˜Three Kingdomsā€™.

One hopes that Total War: Arena will see a resurgence soon, and on other platforms, but for now, a changed language pack can only suffice for now.
