CD Projekt Red is moving all hands over to its upcoming Witcher project, either The Witcher 4 or its remake of the series’ first installment. Following the Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty expansion, this new project will be CD Projekt Red’s top priority.
During an earnings call (covered by VGC) Adam Kiciński, the CEO of CD Projekt Red, confirmed that the developers working on Phantom Liberty will soon be moving to “Polaris.” Polaris is the codename for the next mainline Witcher game and over 260 developers will be working on it.
“At the end of July, the Phantom Liberty team working on the pre-release phase consisted of 300 people,” he said during an earnings call. “That’s fewer than at the end of 2022, but it still remains our biggest team. On the other hand, the Polaris team has grown to almost 260 developers at the end of July.”
Since Polaris is the next mainline Witcher game, it’s likely that this project is going to be The Witcher 4. CD Projekt Red did promise that a new trilogy for Geralt would be starting soon and they have all the devs needed for it. Hearing about 260 developers working on one game is interesting since the company started laying off some employees.
We’re going to get plenty of Witcher games in the next few years. In addition to a brand-new trilogy, a remake of the first game was also announced by CD Projekt Red. Currently, it’s not yet known which project will come out first, though the earnings call points at the start of this new trilogy.
Phantom Liberty will be the only expansion coming to Cyberpunk 2077, due to the change in engines. Future games will be using the latest Unreal Engine, so expect to see The Witcher 4 run on that as well.
