The Flash movie sets up Batfleck-starring Crisis on Infinite Earths adaptation

Warmer Bros’ DC universe is one of the most tumultuous cinematic universes still going. With multiple versions of movies, recasted characters and a hastily rushed overarching story, the DCEU is messy-but-good, and there's a lot on the horizon. Not only will DC fans get Aquaman and Wonder Woman sequels relatively soon, but there's also a movie based entirely on The Flash.

While a movie based around DC's beloved speedster is exciting in itself, the upcoming film’s multiverse angle is even more intriguing. The movie has already confirmed an appearance by both Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton Batmans (Batmen?), but what it’s setting up is even more interesting.

The Flash leads into Crisis on Infinite Earths

Much like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the DC Extended Universe is moving into multiversal storylines with multiple versions of characters. In the MCU, we've already seen this with Spider-Man: No Way Home, and we’ll see even more in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. This will eventually conclude in a multiversal Avengers movie in a few years time.

For the DC universe, The Flash will be the first attempt at a Multiverse story. However, according to insider sources, the upcoming movie will actually be setting up its own multiverse team-up movie, and it's based on a fan favourite.

Industry insider KC Walsh explained that The Flash movie will frequently refer to the Snyderverse while setting up an adaptation of Crisis on Infinite Earths. The DC insider explained how the movie will set up the event. He said:

“The Flash film itself is not restoring the Snyderverse nor putting that continuity in the spotlight. Instead, it simply ‘sets up Crisis’ by including a tease showing Ben Affleck’s Batman. This means he, and likely everyone else in his timeline, isn’t completely erased from existence.”

Ben Affleck can return for a bit

Walsh explained that an adaptation of Crisis on Infinite Earths will plan for another appearance from Ben Affleck’s Batman. While the actor is coming back for The Flash in a minor role, the actor has expressed that he's done with the DC Universe. However, he could always come back.

The industry insider said: “Batfleck is still very much done with DCEU, but leaving the door open for him to come back during a Crisis event if he wants makes sense, but I'll take the L"

Fans of the DC Extended Universe all adore Ben Affleck as Batman, often citing him as the best part of the universe. Any appearance from the actor in a new DC film will certainly grant the film a massive dope of hype. Furthermore, what's the point of doing a multiverse movie without using multiple established versions of characters.
