A movie adaptation of Ubisoft’s Tom Clancy's The Division is perhaps more timely than ever.

An online action RPG set in an open-world New York, the game follows a team of elite operatives tasked with restoring order in a city that’s been ravaged by a deadly viral epidemic. A little too close for comfort, perhaps?

Nonetheless, The Division is still on the horizon – but it won’t be heading to the big screen. Yep, the adaptation is going to be a big-budget Netflix Original movie.

The film has a script penned by Rafe Judkins (TV’s Agents Of SHIELD), and will be directed by David Leitch. A prolific Hollywood stunt coordinator turned A-list director, you’ll know him for helming such recent hits as Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2 and Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw. So at least we know the action will be suitably epic.

Keep reading for everything we know about Netflix’s The Division movie – including who’s in it, who’s behind it, and when it’s getting released.

The Division movie cast

The movie version of The Division already has two high-profile stars attached. Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain are playing the film’s leads, although there’s no word yet on exactly who their characters will be.

Both of them have also reportedly taken on roles as producers on the film, which means they must be pretty invested in the project.

The Division movie plot

We don’t know any specifics about the movie’s plot just yet, but it will likely follow the same basic storyline as the first game in the series.

On Black Friday, a deadly virus – dubbed ‘The Dollar Flu’ – is planted on banknotes and quickly spreads around New York City, causing widespread devastation. In response, the US government’s Strategic Homeland Division (the “Division” of the title) activates a highly trained group of sleeper agents to enter the quarantined metropolis and rescue any survivors. Cue twists, turns, and some action-packed set-pieces.

Contactless payments are the way forward, folks.

The Division movie filming

The movie is scheduled to start filming in late 2020/early 2021. Unless there are any further coronavirus-related lockdowns, it looks like it won’t be subject to any major delays. The shoot is planned to take place in locations around New York City, where the film (and game) is set.

The Division movie release date

With filming not taking place until at least the end of this year, the movie likely won’t be released before early 2022. It could even be timed to tie in with a mooted third instalment in the game franchise.

The Netflix-produced film is set to head straight to the streaming service and bypass any kind of cinema release. The only Netflix films that have had that luxury are those that have had a shot at Oscar glory… And as an action-thriller genre flick based on a video game, The Division doesn’t exactly carry a lot of awards potential.
