Telltale Games is engaging in mass layoffs in what is becoming a worrisome industry-wide trend. Despite the negativity that comes with all these firings, the company promised that titles like The Wolf Among Us 2 are still in production.
Game Awards host Geoff Keighley released a statement on behalf of Telltale, with the company blaming ‘current market conditions’ for all these releases. It was also in this post where it was revealed that The Wolf Among Us 2 was still in production, despite the loss of staff.
"Due to current market conditions, we regrettably had to let some of our Telltale team go recently. We did not take this action lightly, and our commitment to storytelling and finding new ways to do so remains the same,” Telltale explained through Keighley. “We are grateful to everyone for their dedication along this journey, and we are working to support everyone impacted. All projects currently in development are still in production, and we have no further updates at this time. "
Seeing Telltale Games go through layoffs like this is disappointing, especially since this isn’t the first time it’s happened. Back in 2018, Telltale went bankrupt after many of their games failed to make a dent on sales. Aside from The Walking Dead, which remains their best-selling game, and The Wolf Among Us, a lot of their titles just didn’t cut it.
Of course, Telltale isn’t the only company cutting employees right now, as a number of major gaming companies have opted to do the same. Uncharted and The Last of Us developer Naughty Dog made layoffs, while also attempting to silence the ex-employees about this move. Epic Games also infamously cut a lot of their work force, most of whom came from Mediatonic, the developers of Fall Guys.
