It seems that the Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League battle pass leak is true it might not as bad as gamers think. Apparently, the game’s battle pass will only include cosmetics, so players won’t have to worry about any pay-to-win being locked behind a paywall.
On one hand, it’s good that the game won’t be relying on a pay-to-win model in a single-player story. However, this doesn’t excuse the game for having one since players will always have that feeling of missing out (FOMO) when seeing others with cool cosmetics.
As long as Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League has a satisfying single-player campaign, fans should be okay with the final product. The last thing we need is another grind-heavy live-service title that fails to keep things interesting. Simply put: we don’t need another Gotham Knights.
Sources from the development team have told VGC that the upcoming Suicide Squad game will only focus on cosmetics. Gamers won’t have to worry about XP items or other shortcuts that can be bought, at least according to these sources.
“You don’t start off debuffed and weak,” the source claimed. “You just start off great and can get ridiculous, like Arkham Knight’s Batman.”
Considering that the playable characters are Captain Boomerang, Deadshot, Harley Quinn, and King Shark, cool cosmetic outfits don’t exactly come to mind. Harley and Deadshot have been in enough comics to have outfits that stand out but we’re not expecting much for the other two.
The upcoming Suicide Squad game isn’t the only superhero title to have cosmetics locked behind paywalls. Firaxis’ recent Marvel’s Midnight Suns also held numerous cosmetics behind microtransactions, not even giving them to Collector’s Edition customers. However, even that didn’t have the gall to include a battle pass.
While hiding cosmetics behind a battle pass isn’t the worst thing in the world, it can still inspire a fair bit of FOMO. The game is expected to have multiplayer and other players will get jealous when they see the various costumes they haven’t earned yet. It’s why games like Overwatch 2 and Apex Legends make the big bucks, though they’re at least Free-to-Play.
