The theatrical cut of Suicide Squad is hands-down the worst DC movie Warner Bros have released so far. Not only was the movie incredibly rushed, but the first half of the movie was just character introductions set to popular songs. It was, essentially, brainless.
Alongside fan campaigns for the Snyder Cut of Justice League, a smaller fanbase have been clamouring due the Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad. In response to the fan campaign, the movie’s editor has revealed some new details on the film.
Suicide Squad was like Black Hawk Down
In an interview with CinemaBlend, editor David Hickman explains that the original film was very dark. Much like the director’s previous work, the movie was very militaristic. The editor said:
"[Ayer’s] was a much darker film. It was almost like a Black Hawk Down type thing. It was just very militarized, very serious. I mean, of course there were supposed to be comedic moments with Will Smith, but it was a darker film."
In the past, Jared Leto has explained that his version of the Joker was originally scarier with enough content for another movie. Hickman confirms that this Leto's Joker was better in the original, but the character’s actions didn't fit the rest of the film.
"[He] did a really good job... we just couldn't find a purpose for it because sometimes he would just go off on such crazy, insane tangents and it would be really hard to weave it into the film."
Will we ever see this version of the movie?
It seems unlikely that Warner Bros will ever release the Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad. The movie studio's release of Zack Snyder's Justice League appears to have been done begrudgingly. While the release of the Snyder Cut was planned to close the book for fans, releasing the Ayer Cut would do the opposite.
Furthermore, Warner Bros isn't exactly keen on airing their dirty laundry any further. Fans are already upset at reports of the studio’s constant meddling for Batman v Superman and Justice League.
Instead, WB is becoming more hands off. James Gunn's The Suicide Squad has allegedly been created without studio interference. Of course, the existence of that movie is yet another reason why the Ayer Cut will stay unreleased.
