Despite being a massive PC release, Bethesda Game Studios’ Starfield will not have Nvidia DLSS support on launch. However, one modder will be bringing Starfield DLSS support to fans, for a fee.
DLSS modder PureDark has confirmed that they will be bringing Nvidia’s upscaling technology to Bethesda’s massive RPG as soon as they have access to the title. However, the mod will not be a free release, at least on launch.
In a post on his Discord server, via Reddit, PureDark revealed that the Starfield DLSS mod will be locked behind a Patreon paywall. While some of the modder’s mods have been free, others have been available to paying fans only.
“Many will also criticize me for not making it free, but I am way past that,” the modder said. “Everyone is welcome to make a free implementation of their own and share it freely thus make [sic] my mod useless. I am done reading reddit posts.”
Excitement around PureDark’s Starfield DLSS mod has been at an all-time high as the technology is seemingly missing in the PC game. Due to an AMD partnership, Starfield will only include FSR image reconstruction, despite Nvidia’s DLSS and Intel’s XeSS being much better technologies.
Despite this, many fans are unhappy with PureDark’s decision to place their mod behind a paywall, especially as many are unsure as to the legal implications of charging for DLSS implementation.
At the time of writing, the modder has added the image reconstruction tech into a number of beloved PC games. Red Dead Redemption 2, Skyrim, The Last of Us, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and more have all benefited from DLSS implementation from the modder.
As the modder doesn’t currently have access to Starfield, the highly anticipated mod is currently without a release date. However, as the game launches officially for Deluxe Edition owners on September 1st, the mod will likely be released shortly after.
For everyone else, Starfield will release on September 6th for PC and Xbox Series owners. The game will also be playable on Xbox One, PC and mobile via Xbox Cloud Gaming with Game Pass.
