Star Trek and M*A*S*H actress Sally Kellerman passes away at 84

Oscar-nominated actress Sally Kellerman has passed away at the age of 84 years old. The actress, most known during the 60s and 70s — in both television and movie roles — died after a years-long battle with dementia.

Kellerman's decades-long acting career occurred during the huge Hollywood boom of the 60s and 70s. However, the actress is most renowned for her role in the 1970 black comedy war film M*A*S*H. In the movie, Kellerman played Major Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan, earning her an Oscar nomination that year.

Outside of M*A*S*H, Sally Kellerman was for her role in Star Trek: The Original Series. The actress starred in one of the series first ever episodes — “Where No Man Has Gone Before” — the third episode ever made.

In the episode, Kellerman plays Dr. Elizabeth Dehner, a viral character for the story. The narrative sees an Enterprise crewman, Gary Mitchell, gain ESP psychic powers. As Mitchell gets more powerful, Dehner outs herself as a psychic to fight him.

At the end of the episode, Kellerman’s character sacrifices herself. In her dying words to William Shatner’s Captain Kirk, she says the infamous Star Trek quote: “I’m sorry … you can’t know what it’s like to … be almost a god.”

She also had a singing career

Via The Hollywood Reporter, Sally Kellerman isn't just known for her acting prowess in the 60s and 70s era. In fact, the renowned, Oscar-nominated actress also had a short stint as a musician after starring in M*A*S*H.

In 1972, the Star Trek actress released her debut album, Roll With the Feelin’. The actress continued her musicial career in 2009 with her second album, Sally, named after the 1976 pop song of the same name. That particular pop song was named after Kellerman by ex-boyfriend Mark Farner, singer-guitarist of Grand Funk Railroad.
