Spider-Man's Venom 2 role was constantly “in flux” during development

Venom: Let There Be Carnage is currently out in cinemas. As we all know, if a movie is out and you're on social media, you already know everything about it. With that said, Spider-Man turns up at the end of Venom 2.

After beating up Carnage, Eddie and Venom decide to take a vacation. During a discussion about other universes, the two are transported to the main Marvel Cinematic Universe. How do we know this? Because the two turn on the TV and Tom Holland's Spider-Man is on the news.

Spider-Man’s role in Venom 2 was always changing

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, director Andy Serkis revealed that Spider-Man’s involvement was not guaranteed. A crossover between the two characters has constantly been teased, but fans believed it would be years away.

The nature of Spider-Man’s appearance was always changing. From a short teaser to a full scene, the inclusion was constantly in flux. Serkis revealed that the scene wasn't 100% going to happen by the time filming began.

He said:

“[The Spider-Man scene was] 100 percent in flux, yeah. It couldn’t have been more in flux-y if you tried. Yeah, of course, it was something that they talked about from before I even came on to the movie. There were moments where he was going to be in the story, potentially, and then he wasn’t. But no, we decided that we wanted to really examine the Venom-verse first. So, as we were going through principal photography, the inevitable discussions had to be had, but it wasn’t until very, very late on that we reached the precise notion of the teaser that we wanted to lay in there.”

What happens now?

Venom 2 cements the character’s appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, it's not certain how the character will play into your MCU as a whole. We know that a Spider-Man and Venom movie will happen in the near future, but what about the rest of the MCU?

The character’s tenure in the comics has often led to some fantastic team-up stories that would be awesome to see in live-action. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem likely that Marvel would want to use Venom all that much outside of Spider-Man.

Perhaps the Symbiote will appear in the upcoming movie No Way Home. After all, there is one trailer shot that we think looks very much like Venom. Could this be a small cameo just for fans of the once-spin-off series?
