Sony secures 12 million PlayStation 5 chips to improve stock issues

The ongoing global chip shortage has resulted in restricted sales of consoles, phones and computers worldwide. Combined with a terrible year for the rising trend of scalpers, many gamers have been unable to get their hands on a PlayStation 5.

Thankfully, Sony is working on getting more PlayStation 5 consoles out for its very willing customer base. While supply issues are still not ideal for the massive demands surrounding the next PlayStation, Sony is successfully improving its situation.

Sony secures PlayStation 5 chips

Reported by VGC, Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki explained that the company had secured 12 million chips to further PS5 production. The CFO explained that the company is no longer concerned regarding the lack of components.

Totoki explained:

“The shortage of semiconductors has impacts in various areas and through various measures, we have been taking some action. For PS5, the target has been set for the number of units to be sold this year, and we have secured the number of chips that is necessary to achieve that. Regarding the supply of semiconductors, we are not concerned.”

The company's fastest selling console

Despite the lack of components to satiate demand, the PS5 is currently Sony's fastest-selling console of all time. After eight months, the next-gen console has already sold over 10 million units worldwide.

Sony's target for the PlayStation 5 is around 22.6 million units by the end of the fiscal year. After securing around 12 million chips, the console manufacturer appears to be on track to hit its fiscal goal.

In other news, PlayStation is already changing consoles. The PlayStation 5 Digital Edition's newest model weighs less than the launch model. Furthermore, Sony is reportedly looking to refine the base model soon.
