While the PSVR 2 is undoubtedly one of the best VR headsets on the market, its audience is... limited in scope. You'll need a PS5 console alone to power the device, so its an investment of roughly $1000, making it easy to see why people want PC support for the headset to expand their virtual reality horizons. Fortunately, that support is almost here.
PlayStation confirmed recently that PC support for the PSVR 2 headset was being looked into, further proving that console VR seems like a dead end. However, there was no timeline to suggest when support would arrive, but its a promising sign that the PSVR 2 won't be left in the dust, even if Sony has halted production on the headset.
That leads us today. A developer, who has been working on a PSVR 2 PC driver that's almost finished, confirmed on Twitter that Sony has released PC support for the PSVR 2 with the latest firmware update, opening the doors to the start of PC support, and PlayStation didn't even announce this huge milestone.
However, there's probably a pretty good reason why PlayStation didn't announce it. Firstly, it's unclear as to whether the PSVR 2 is enabled with Nvidia, meaning that most of you with a VR-ready PC won't be able to use some of the best graphics cards with the device, unless you're using an AMD card.
Secondly, you'll need a piece of hardware to attach the PSVR 2 headset to your PC. The developer behind the PC driver, iVRy, is selling an adapter as part of their development of the unofficial driver. However, it's only available to purchase via their Patreon, but Sony will likely release its own adapter when the PC support is announced.
While it's not all great news, it's definitely exciting to see some progress towards PSVR 2 support on the PC, especially if your headset has just been gathering dust. Hopefully, we won't have to wait long until an announcement arrives that PC support is enabled.
