Update: The PS5 Slim is here! We've listed where you can buy it below.
After months of leaks and speculation, Sony has revealed the PS5 Slim, a smaller version of the infamously massive PlayStation console just in time for Christmas.
Revealed in a PlayStation Blog post, the new PS5 Slim is a slightly different design. Exactly the same as earlier leaked images and videos, the new Sony PS5 offers a slightly smaller profile with more internal storage.
In order give users more customisation, the new PS5 Slim offers the ability to add a 4K UHD blu-ray drive to the console’s digital edition. Currently, the PS5 Digital Edition can’t be fitted with a disc drive after launch, but the new model can. The Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive for PS5 can be purchased after the fact for just $79.99 USD or £99.99 GBP.
The new PS5 “has been reduced in volume by more than 30%, and weight by 18% and 24% compared to the previous models”. While not a colossal difference in size, it does make Sony’s infamously massive device more pleasing in the home. No more ridiculing from Xbox users now!
The PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive will cost $499.99 USD whereas the Digital Edition will cost a cut down $449.99. As expected, those who buy a disc drive after the fact will spend slightly more on their PlayStation 5 console.
Importantly, the new PS5 Slim also comes with more storage than the base machine. While the launch model comes with just 825GB of SSD space, the Slim model increases this to a full 1TB. Hallelujah.
Just like the prior PS5, a horizontal stand will come with the machine. However, a vertical stand can also be purchased for an additional $29.99.
The PlayStation 5 Slim was just one leak of Sony’s huge plans for its console future. Reportedly, the console maker is also looking into making a PlayStation 5 Pro that will actually handle 8K resolution games, just like the PS5’s retail box teases.
