Sketch comedy blasts Zuckerberg’s Metaverse: ‘who is this for? ‘

Mark Zuckerberg’s Metaverse has been lambasted by everyone from Twitter users to the country of Iceland. In a new YouTube video, sketch comedy creator Ryan George has released his take on things, asking the question: “Who is this for!”

Sketch comedy vs Zuckerberg’s Metaverse

Released on his official YouTube channel, comedian Ryan George took aim at Zuckerberg’s Metaverse in an all-new sketch. Designed around a time-travel talk show, the sketch involves a modern-day man describing The Metaverse to a 90s TV host.

“You see, The Metaverse is this thing where users can create an avatar for themselves and then interact with other users and user-generated content in an online virtual world,” says the modern-day reporter.

When asked if that’s a new concept, the character responds: “Technically, it’s been done a bunch of times before, like Second Life. Second Life is this thing where users can create an avatar for themselves and then interact with other users and user-generated content in an online virtual world. But Second Life came out like 20 years ago in 2003.”

The sketch explains how the development of The Metaverse is a huge deal. George points out that thousands of people are working in the technology, leading the 90s-era host to believe that it must look insane. After seeing an infamous picture of the virtual world, he declares: “That kinda looks like the video games we have now.”

When asked what people are supposed to do in The Metaverse, George responds: “You can talk to friends and strangers; you can have meetings; you can work; you can buy things. Except, in this case, it would be under the umbrella of a large corporate. So, you know, everything would go through them.”

The sketch goes on to explain that the virtual world is being created by Meta, one of the most untrustworthy companies around. Furthermore, it even dogs on CEO Mark Zuckerberg, once again pointing out that he doesn’t look human. Watch it below:

The general perception of The Metaverse

Ryan George’s sketch may not be groundbreaking, but it shows more of the general perception of The Metaverse. A rule of thumb for successful technology is that it’s easy to understand and the point is clear, two things that Zuckerberg’s Metaverse lacks.

If you went back to the 90s and showed off a smartphone and WiFi, it would be easy to see the point of new technology. As for The Metaverse, the point doesn’t carry over. In modern time, this is even worse as social virtual worlds already exist. VR Chat worlds, anyone?

There’s simply not much that the concept of The Metaverse that actually appeals to a modern audience. Perhaps it’s tech for the future — maybe we’re not ready — or perhaps it’s just not meant for us.
