With the launch of the latest generation of consoles, we've seen video game prices increase by $10, with Sony's PS5 leading the charge to making $69.99 the new norm.
Now, however, Sega seems to be set to follow their Japanese rival by increasing the price of their games too.
According to a May 16 report published by Sega, the company is looking at the market, its competitors, and reassessing its position.
"In the global marketplace, AAA game titles for console have been sold at $59.99 for many years," CEO Haruki Satomi and CFO Koichi Fukazawa say in the report. "Titles sold at $69.99 have appeared in the last year. We would like to review the prices of titles that we believe are commensurate with price increases, while also keeping an eye on market conditions."
In the report, the heads also state that games like Yakuza do well with core audiences, but they "will continue to release new titles for Sonic, and for 'Sonic Frontiers', which sold 3.2 million units in FY2023/3."
With Sonic being a mainstream pillar of Sega's portfolio, then, it will likely be one of the first series' to get a price increase because the company knows there are many dedicated fans.
Other excerpts from the full report tell us that Sega expects revenue from unannounced games over the next year or so to be "considerable". So, when you tie all the pieces together, then there's a very real possibility that we could see a new Sonic game launch at $69.99 sooner rather than later.
Will you be playing the blue hedgehog's adventure if Sega ups the price? Of course you will.
