Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Price: Will It Be More Expensive?

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 is the predicted follow up to the Galaxy Watch 4, but asides from various patents and leaks, it's still very much a mystery, and that goes for the price as well.

In fact, even the watch's existence hasn't been confirmed yet, although it does seem like the logical next step, much in the same way the Samsung S23 and Z-Fold 4 are too.

But if the rumours are true, and we're to expect a variety of upgrades, it does pose the question of if the Galaxy Watch 5 will be more expensive this time around or not?

Should you start saving, or will we be in for a pleasant surprise? Let's take a look at what we know so far.

Will The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Be Expensive?

So first things first, yes, we think the Galaxy Watch 5 will be expensive, and that's based on what's come before.

Now what has come before breaks off into a few different variations, so there's not one Samsung Galaxy Watch 4, but several.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 comes in two sizes: 40mm and 44mm. It also comes with just Bluetooth or Bluetooth and 4G.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic, which is designed to look more like a traditional watch, comes in two sizes: 42mm and 46mm. It also comes with just Bluetooth or Bluetooth and 4G. Here's what they typically retail for.

  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic (42mm/4G) - $349.99/ Ā£389
  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic (46mm/4G) - $429.99/ Ā£409

As you can see, there's a lot of variety here, but we could say that the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 will be at least $249 / Ā£249 when it releases, but there are a few factors that may play a role in the final pricing - namely competition and new features.

The closest competition is arguably the Apple Watch, namely the Apple Watch SE and the Apple Watch 7.

The Apple Watch SE (released in 2020) retails for around Ā£249, which is around the same as the smaller Galaxy Watch 4 with Bluetooth, while the Apple Watch 7 retails for around Ā£369, which aligns more with the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic.

If we compare the offerings of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and Apple Watch SE, Samsung actually beats out the SE, thanks to its larger screen, always on display, and higher pixel density. That being said, Apple does feature fall detection, which is a literal life-changing feature.

And that brings us to the next question - what new features are Samsung planning on adding, and will they command a higher price thanks to a higher manufacturing cost?

Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Design Improvements

The most prominent finding on what we could see with the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 is an extendable and rotatable display.

Patents found by Letsgodigital uncovered the following images, which show how it could work.

As you can see, this is a serious step up from what we've had in the past, and if it were going to go ahead we'd expect a big price increase for the unique functionality.

When you consider how expensive the Galaxy Z-Fold series has been, even though the Z-Fold 4 is rumoured to be less than the Z-Fold 3, it's easy to see why.

But, as we all know, patents are not always an indicator of what's to come, at least not in the immediate future.

It may be the case that these don't head our way until around the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6, which we could expect in 2023.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Battery Improvements

Larger batteries typically mean higher cost, and it looks like there could be some improvements with the Galaxy Watch 5 in this department.

Two batteries were spotted by SamMobile going through Safety Korea certification, that were assumed to be for the Galaxy Watch 5. They have 276 mAh and 397 mAhc capacities, which is up around 30 mAh from the Galaxy Watch 4 models.

If we take the increased battery size and apply it to the entry level Galaxy Watch 5, it would make sense that it would increase the price, but then again, larger batteries are becoming more and more common at lower prices - case in point the new Samsung A-series, which boast 5000 mAh across the board.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 New Monitoring Features

New features on the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 don't just revolve around the form factor, but the monitoring tools too.

Korean news source ETNews suggested that we could see a thermometer, designed to detect when you're starting to get a fever, or even cycles.

The equation is arguably simple here - more features equals more cost, but that all depends on the actual cost of including this type of sensor.

We'll have to wait and see...

Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Price Predictions

So with everything we know here, how much could the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 be on release?

We're assuming that this line won't have the extendable screen, will have a bigger battery, and will have a new thermometer feature. We're also assuming they'll stick to the same sizes as before, and feature a classic variation too.

  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 (40mm/ Bluetooth) - $279 / Ā£279
  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 (44mm/ Bluetooth) - $299/ Ā£289
  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 (40mm/4G) - $329/ Ā£309
  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 (44mm/4G) - $349/ Ā£329
  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Classic (42mm/Bluetooth) - $369/ Ā£369
  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Classic (46mm/Bluetooth) - $399/ Ā£389
  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Classic (42mm/4G) - $389/ Ā£369
  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Classic (46mm/4G) - $449/ Ā£429

We won't know for sure until we see that announcements, but we think the Galaxy Watch 5 will be slightly higher in price than the Watch 4, but stay relatively affordable at the entry level. The primary reason for the slight increase in price comes down to what we think will be the likely inclusion of more sensors and monitors, plus an increased battery size.

Time will tell, so be sure to check back in with us for future updates!
