Red Dead Redemption 2 is regarded as one of the most beautiful games made for the PS4. With that said, fans are already wondering just how gorgeous this game might look on the PS5. But it's still a question as to whether there is actually a Red Dead Redemption 2 PS5 upgrade in the works for the PS5.
We know that Rockstar is giving GTA Van update, upgrading and improving whatever they can, for the new generation of consoles. Additionally, games like Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher are getting next gen updates. Those updates have ran into some delays, now expected to be released in 2022. There have also been some interesting rumours about the original Red Dead Redemption, and a possible third instalment of this series.
So if GTA V is getting the treatment, what about RDR2? Is an upgrade version in the works? Will it give us 4k, and 60fps? Will it be remastered, to fully exploit the new hardware? What other rumours have come from within Rockstar? Time to saddle up and find out.
Will there be a Red Dead Redemption 2 PS5 upgrade?
At the time of writing, Rockstar has said nothing about a remastered and updated version of RDR2 for the PS5. We know that they are putting a lot of focus into GTA V, with a release planned for later this year. It's also worth bearing in mind that GTA V was released back in 2013, and was actually available on the PS3 and Xbox 360. So it's well worth an update.
RDR2, in contrast, was only released in late-2018. So it may well be that Rockstar doesn't feel that the time and effort, as well as cost, would be justified at this stage in the game's life. That's not to say that an update won't be coming over the hill in the future. But it does make some sense that they would prioritise an older game, which has more room for improvement.
We can hope that if they get around to it, Rockstar will give RDR2 native 4k and 60fps as a minimum. These would be fairly standard expectations for the new generation of hardware, Indeed, some games are already offering 120 fps, for example, Destiny 2, WRC 9, and Borderlands 3.

RDR2 PS5 Release Date
So while it may be a little disappointing to know that we don't a release date for a PS5 version of RDR2, Rockstar is giving us something to look forward to. A remastered and improved version of GTA V, which will contain lots of additional features, is a good start.
There are also many rumours that the team is working feverishly on GTA 6. Rockstar and Take-Two are keeping characteristically tight-lipped. But there is some speculation suggesting this game still won't be ready until potentially 2024. Which again, would make sense after the investment in the update GTA V. They wouldn't want to cannibalise sales of that game too soon.
What happens after that, is anybody's guess. It took 8 years between Red Dead Redemption and RDR2. It's been 8 years between GTA V and the remastered version for the PS5. So probably best for us all not to expect anything anytime soon.
What About Red Dead Redemption?
If the news that there is no news on the RDR2 remaster has left you disappointed, maybe this will help. According to Rockstarmag.Fr (via dsogaming.com) there are strong rumours that a remaster of the original Red Dead Redemption is in the works.
As is so often the case, Rockstar has said nothing. But Chris, in a Q&A video with his subscribers, did confirm his understanding that the project is very much underway. He suggests it will be a remaster similar to what Rockstar did (or tried to do) with the GTA Trilogy. But whether the disastrous reception to that particular release has had an impact, only time will tell.
Red Dead Redemption 3?
There are also some interesting stories swirling around Red Dead Redemption 3. Again, Rockstar is yet to confirm anything officially. But, there are some breadcrumbs being thrown our way. And like a flock of feral pigeons, we pounce on them. As reported via GGrecon.com, a Rockstar employee's CV was spotted on LinkedIn. And that CV makes reference to:
Two years experience leading vehicle AI team through development of RDR3

It seems highly unlikely that RDR3 could refer to any other Rockstar IP, other than Red Dead Redemption 3. This supports recent quotes from Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick. Asked at a conference whether core franchises have a shelf life, he replied (as reported via VGC):
If it’s really, really great it will keep going. I don’t know if you saw it, I just saw the new Bond film, that was great. And you would like every franchise to be James Bond. There are precious few entertainment franchises of any sort that fall into that category, but they do exist. And I think GTA is one of them, I think Red Dead is one of them

But just in case you think a threequel is about to appear from around a mountain, he also said the following:
It also requires you to be thoughtful and be willing to rest a title so that you have a sense of ‘wow, this is a rare event'

In other words, while RDR3 may well be in development, don't expect it anytime soon. It's 'resting'. Given the eight-year 'rest' between RDR and RDR2, and the 8 years (and counting) since GTA V, we won't be holding our breath.
