One of the marque titles for the PlayStation 5, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart made clever use of the console’s SSD to handle its rapid multiverse portals. However, the upcoming Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart PC port doesn’t require the use of an SSD at all.
A newly released specs sheet for the game’s upcoming PC port does still recommend the use of an SSD, but it claims that the game does not actually need one.
In the specs sheet, the game’s minimum specs state that using a mechanical hard drive is entirely possible. You’ll still need 75GB of storage space to play the game, but you won’t need to use up your previous SSD space.
With this in mind, it leads to the belief that Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart could have been possible on PS4 after all. While the game was touted as only being possible on PlayStation 5 due to the use of SSD technology, this new port shows that the game could have ran on the last-gen console.
However, it’s worth noting that while the minimum specifications for the Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart PC port can run on a HDD, that doesn’t mean it runs well. The specs sheet only states that HDD playback is possible, but only at 720p and 30fps. Whether or not that 30fps target is consistently hit on HDD configs isn’t confirmed.
In comparison, every other recommended specs option for the game outside of minimum settings requires the use of an SSD. If you want decent quality textures, models, environments and more, you will be required to use an SSD, especially when you’re rapidly traversing through the game’s multiverse settings.
Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is one of the best PS5 games on the market. Developed by Spider-Man 2 developer Insomniac Games, the action-platformer was a return to form for the series after a number of disappointing entries.
The game’s upcoming PC port launches later this month on July 26, 2023. Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart PC will launch on Steam and the Epic Games Store.
