Q almost turned down Star Trek: Picard return

In a recent interview with Variety, returning actor John de Lancie discussed how he almost turned down reprising the role of Q.

The Star Trek community shared a rapturous moment of joy when the first teaser for the second season of Star Trek: Picard teased the return of Q.

Q was initially introduced in the pilot episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, where he met and challenged Picard.

The character was initially only planned to appear in the series once. However, the show’s creators brought him back as a recurring character throughout all seven seasons.

Creative worries

Speaking with Variety, De Lancie discusses his fears heading into the role and why he worried about it creatively: “You know, it was, and is, a little bit of a mixed bag. One of the issues that I have is you don’t want to fall into the trap of re-creating.”

De Lancie also touched on his worries about Q’s immortality and the fact he has visually aged: “I was obviously a little concerned - very concerned - about the issues having to do with, well, excuse me, this is 20 years later. I’m supposed to be immortal and I certainly look very mortal."

Q’s season two teaser gave very little away, and the show’s creators provided no details on how de Lancie will be involved. Q speaks at the end of the teaser, stating that “the trial never ends” implying the omnipotent being will be up to the usual tricks of punishing Picard and his crew to the atrocities of humanity.

Fans theorise that Q’s omnipotent powers could be used to take Picard and the team back to The Next Generation, or even into the future.

Fan Feedback

Q has been a fan favourite character since The Next Generation aired. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that fans are positive about de Lancie’s return.

In the interview with Variety, de Lancy comments on the feedback: “The pressure is on! That’s how I feel about it. I find that to be a challenge. I hope that I can match it. I hope that we all can match it, and more to the point, exceed it.”

Season two of Star Trek: Picard will premier some time in 2022 exclusively on Amazon Prime.
