The PS5 is finally here, but to the disappointment of many Virtual Reality fans, it seems the long-rumoured PSVR 2 headset is nowhere in sight. In fact, most of Sony's current plans for VR simply task players with hanging onto a fair amount of PS4-era gear.
The original PSVR headset, which launched back in 2016, is still the only PlayStation-branded virtual reality headset that Sony is selling - and although there is a new PS5 HD Camera currently being sold, Sony does not seem to be categorising that camera as any sort of VR device.

Will there be a PSVR 2 for the PS5?
Following speculation about an upcoming headset, PlayStation's Jim Ryan confirmed in an interview withThe Washington Postthat the next VR device is still a long way off.
"I think we're more than a few minutes from the future of VR," Ryan began. "Sony believes in VR, and we definitely believe at some point in the future, VR will represent a meaningful component of interactive entertainment."
"Will it be this year? No. Will it be next year? No. But will it come at some stage?"
However, Sony's Hideaki Nishino, the SVP of platform planning and management, hinted in an interview with AV Watch that the PS5 may have some separate VR content in the future.
"I would like to expect PS5 to have a VR experience suitable for PS5," he said. "I can't comment any further, but I'd like to expect it."
This new headset VR content might be coming sooner than we thought, following some recent news, too...

Patent indicates new PSVR headset may be in development!
A recently granted patent may indicate that Sony is currently developing a new PSVR headset for the PlayStation 5 console.
The patent was first filed in 2016 by Sony Interactive Entertainment, as reported byLetsGoDigital. It reveals a VR headset that can tell if the user is wearing the headset correctly, using a pressure, motion, or stretch sensor to do so.
This would then translate into feedback for the user in visible feedback on-screen, in the form of an LED response, or through haptic feedback vibrations.
Interestingly, users would be able to create a profile for their head, too. This could inform the headset whether you are bald, wearing a hat, or have a lots of hair, for example.

What is Sony saying about PSVR backwards compatibility?
It was recently revealed that pretty much every PS4 game will work on the new console thanks to PS5 backwards compatibility, with only a handful of random games being left behind.
In its Ultimate FAQ, Sony gave further insight into the VR experience on the next-gen console. "Yes, PlayStation VR games are included among the thousands of PS4 games that are playable on PS5. Playing PS VR games on a PS5 requires a PS VR headset, PlayStation Camera for PS4 and a PlayStation Camera adaptor."
"For the best PS VR experience on PS5, we recommend using a DualShock 4 wireless controller. Select games may require PlayStation Move motion controllers or be compatible with the PlayStation VR Aim controller. The new HD Camera for PS5 is not compatible with PS VR."
