Forget about graphics, frame rates, processing power, loading times and game exclusives. With two next-gen titans – the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X – about to do battle in the pursuit of eager gamers’ hard-earned cash, the real question on everyone’s lips is: how heavy are they?
OK, perhaps that’s overstating it a bit. But with Sony and Microsoft’s new champions both ramping things up in the size department, you’d be forgiven for wondering whether the PS5 and Xbox Series X will be rather heftier in the weight department, too. They’re both stuffed full of cutting-edge new tech, after all.
One thing we do know is that the next-gen consoles will be much bigger than their current-gen counterparts. The Xbox Series X, with its elongated cube-like design, looks set to be a chunky new addition to gamers’ home set-ups. And while the futuristic PS5 looks sleek, it's thought to be the biggest console Sony has ever produced.
But how do the two new consoles stack up in terms of weight? Let’s take a closer look.

Which next-gen console is heavier?
At the moment, it’s a bit of a guessing game as to which of the next-gen consoles is heavier. Microsoft has dropped the official size and weight specs for the Xbox Series X, but Sony are still holding back on the deets for the PS5.
That hasn’t stopped PlayStation fans from estimating the console’s dimensions, though, with many pegging it as around 8 cm taller than the Xbox Series X when placed vertically.
We do know that the Xbox Series X weighs in at 4.45 kg, making it slightly heavier than the Xbox One X (which is 3.81 kg), and it has a much bigger volume than previous consoles in the Xbox family.
Only time will tell if the PS5 is actually lighter on the scales, but it’s worth remembering that more size doesn’t necessarily equal more weight. Take the current generation as an example – the heaviest iteration of Sony’s PlayStation 4, the PS4 Pro, is 3.3 kg. That’s half a kilo lighter than its Microsoft-engineered rival.
What we do know is that both consoles will be incredibly powerful pieces of gaming tech. Hopefully your shelves won't groan under the strain.
