PS5 vs Xbox Series X RAM: Why is it the most important next-gen upgrade, and which console has more?

There can be a lot of confusion between RAM and Storage in a machine. It’s one of the most important components you need to keep in mind, especially if you’re building a Gaming PC.

RAM, or Read Access Memory, is a component that manages the games and applications in a computer in order for it to compute a result. Think of it like breathing space for every application and game. The more breathing space, the more space these games have to work.

With the next-gen consoles it’s going to be very important for RAM to be large enough to handle the 4K textures and the teraflops processing from the GPU.

With that, lets see why it’s more important for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X to have more RAM than what’s needed in a regular Gaming PC of today, and which one has more.

A GDDR of importance

With a PC, you can swap in and out sticks of RAM as you desire if you need to upgrade. A motherboard usually has 4 DDR slots so you can place up to four sticks of DDR RAM in, and the PC will show a huge amount that it can work with.

Currently, the recommended amount is 16GB, but there’s whisperings that future games will be requiring 32GB soon enough, mainly down to the higher-resolution textures that games will be featuring on the next-gen consoles, and then ported to PC.

But with consoles, you cannot take out the RAM and expand it like you can with storage; it’s custom-designed by both Microsoft and Sony so that it can work in-tandem with the other components.

Both consoles need to have a large amount of RAM in order to easily manage the applications and games that will be brought out, and you can be sure that both companies have researched the capabilities of their console to the hilt.

Which has more; PS5 or Series X?

But when it comes down to plain numbers at face-value, both consoles feature 16GB GDDR6 RAM. It’s really the main similarity that the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X share.

We are at a tie-break here, but lets not forget; we haven’t been told the full capabilities of both consoles as yet. We haven’t even seen the UI of the PS5 itself, and that’s been rumoured to feature multi-tasking capabilities that the 16GB RAM will play a big part in.

It will be interesting to see just how much RAM the launch-games will use, especially as these consoles are 95% similar to a PC that someone can almost build at home.

But right now, it will be interesting to see just how the RAM will benefit each console and the games that will be appearing in the next few years.
