There's nothing worse than sitting down to play games and discovering that the PS5 HDMI not working. You may turn on your console, but the TV doesn't show you anything. There is the off chance that the TV is broken, that's not impossible, but usually it's down to the video connection.
If you are experiencing display-related problems, then read on, for some useful tips on what to do, and how you may be able to fix a black screen. Hopefully, we can help your PlayStation 5 work again, getting you back in the game.
How To Fix PS5 Black Screen
Ideally, you want to be using the HDMI cable that came with your PS5. This is an HDMI 2.1 cable, which is optimal for use with your console. Standard HDMI cables may be part of the problem. Here's what we recommend next:
- The first thing to do is visually inspect your hardware. Check to see whether there are any obvious signs of damage. The HDMI port is located on the back left of the console, between the ethernet and the power ports. Are there any bent pins or other obvious signs of damage? Is the HDMI cable itself worn or fraying? Check that the HDMI port on your TV is also in good condition.
- Test the HDMI cable on another device, such as a Blu-ray player or a laptop connected to the TV.
- Make sure the HDMI cable is properly connected to your PS5. The cable should be flush with the console.
- We know it seems obvious, but make sure you are on the correct channel for the console input. This is especially true if your TV has multiple HDMI ports.
Other Steps to Try
Try booting your PS5 in Safe Mode, to change the video output. To do this:
- Turn off your console by holding the power button for three seconds. The power indicator will blink for a few moments before turning off.
- Once the console is off, press and hold the power button again. Release it after you hear the second beep — you'll hear a beep when you first press, and another beep seven seconds later.
- Connect the controller with the USB cable and press the PS button on the controller.
- Once you are in Safe Mode, select Option 2 - Change Video Output.
- Then set HDCP to HDCP 1.4 only and restart your console.
Finally, some users have found that their HDR settings on their TV can conflict with those of the PS5. So disabling HDR on your PS5 may resolve the problem. Go to PS5 Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR and turn it off.
If none of these steps works, then it may be time to contact PlayStation Support for additional help. They will also be able to assess whether your console may need repairing. But how can you be sure there is an issue with the HDMI connection? We'll look at some telltale signs next.

Signs of an HDMI Related Issue
There are several fairly obvious indicators that your PS5 HDMI isn't working. Most obviously would be a black screen or a message on screen such as "no input" or "no signal". If you are definitely on the correct channel for the HDMI port you are using, this would strongly suggest that no video signal is being received.
There's also an issue where the PS5 turns on, displays a blue light for a lengthy period, then switches itself off again. This can point to a hardware issue, and would almost certainly need a repair.
It's worth mentioning that even if you are feeling brave, taking apart your console and attempting to repair it yourself is not the best idea. If you need to repair or replace the HDMI port, you'd almost certainly need to do some soldering. Doing so will inevitably void any warranty, and you may end up doing more damage than was there to begin with.
