PS5 firmware update patch notes
Sony is notorious for dropping updates with incredibly vague patch notes, but the latest update includes more details than usual. The patch notes are as follows:
- The following issue was resolved: The PS4 version of the game was sometimes installed from the PS4 game disc even after upgrading the disc version of a PS4 game to the PS5 version.
- This system software update improves system performance.
So what does this actually mean?
One of the most commonly reported issues with the PS5 stemmed from the free PS5 update that players were given with some PS4 games. Games such as Watch Dogs Legion, Assassin's Creed: Valhalla and Spider-Man: Miles Morales offered free PS5 upgrades, but still required players to insert the PS4 disc to play the PS5 version. The problem was that every time the player went to play this game by inserting the PS4 disc, it would prompt the PS4 version to install. According to Sony, this has now been resolved.
Alongside this fix, we also have Sony's classic 'improves system performance' line. We don't know the specifics of what has been improved, but some PS5 owners are reporting that the disk spinning problem - an issue where the disc would randomly spin, even when not in use - has been resolved.

How to download the PS5 System Software update
The new PS5 update should automatically download when you first boot up your PS5, so long as you are connected to the internet.
It is only 868.3MB, meaning you will not have to wait too long for the update to finish.
If you have automatic software updates turned off, you will need to go to Settings > System > System Software Updates and Settings to check for the new update manually.
