PS3 Update 4.87: What has the latest system update changed? What's new on the PlayStation 3 software in 2020?

Sure, the PS5 is out now and people are trying everything they can to get their hands on one (do not buy one for more than the RRP).

While for many people that means that the older PlayStations are gone forever now, it's not actually the case for everyone.

Some people love a good old-fashioned retro gaming session.

Also, some people are Sony and are updating an old console for some reason.

The PS3 is getting an update

According to RPCS3, which is "is an open-source PlayStation 3 emulator and debugger for Windows, Linux and BSD," there's a brand-new system update for the PS3.

This is, to say the least, kind of surprising, even ignoring the fact that the PS5 has just released, the PS3 came out in 2006 for most people, and seeing it updated 14 years later is, well, odd.

Nevertheless, that's exactly what's happening, and while the update isn't doing anything revolutionary (you can't use it to play PS5 games), it is good news for anybody that simply hasn't upgraded their console in a while.

What's in the update?

The update mostly focuses on stability, but it also includes a minor security fix along with an update for Blu-Ray playing that means you can play more modern Blu-Rays on it.

This is great news for those who simply use the PS3 as a nice cheap way to watch Blu-Ray discs and occasionally jump into classic games like Tokyo Jungle.

You have to wonder if this will be the last update ever for the PS3, or if we'll end up with something else coming down the line.

We'll just have to keep our eyes peeled and see what comes out in the next few years. Maybe we'll get another update in 2034?
