Obsidian Entertainment’s Outer Worlds 2 may come to PlayStation 5 after all, but there’s not that much hope. While there’s a slim chance that an Outer Worlds PS5 port releases, Xbox hasn’t made a decision on whether they will bring the game to Sony’s console.
During a cross examination with the FTC to discuss the ongoing Microsoft/Activision acquisition, Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty revealed that Obsidian’s RPG could still come to PS5.
When asked if Obsidian’s upcoming RPG will be an Xbox and PC exclusive title, Booty claimed that a “decision has not been made” on the game. While it will still launch on the Xbox Game Pass subscription service, Microsoft could release the game on Sony’s console.
Xbox has been keen to bring some of its exclusive titles to other platforms in the past. While it has generally avoided PlayStation releases, exclusives such as Ori and the Will of the Wisps has released on Nintendo Switch. Xbox even released Cuphead, its once-exclusive platformer, on Switch and PS4.
The Outer Worlds 2 PS5 port could become reality if Xbox wants, especially considering the precedent. With the first game available on the console, and its recent remaster, the new RPG could become a PS5 title in the future.
Xbox does currently have a lot of RPGs in development with exclusivity in mind. Alongside the absolute behemoth that is Bethesda Game Studio’s Starfield, Obsidian is working on the fantasy RPG Avowed, and InXile is working on its steampunk RPG Clockwork Revolution. Even the upcoming Fable reboot will be a gorgeous fantasy RPG.
Releasing an Outer Worlds 2 PS5 port wouldn’t do much damage to the Xbox brand, especially if the release would help the company to pass its Activision acquisition. Will the game release on PlayStation? Only time will tell.
The Outer Worlds 2 is expected to launch on Xbox Series consoles and PC in late 2024 or early 2025, close to the release of Indiana Jones. Obsidian’s RPG is still in early development.
