Earlier this week, subscription service website Onlyfans announced that its porn content was going the way of the Dodo. Despite most users only opening the website to support adult content creators’ adult content, the service was cutting it all out.
After much backlash, Onlyfans has decided that it will keep selling sexually explicit content after all. However, will content creators stay on the platform, or will they continue moving on? We're not psychic.
Why did Onlyfans ban explicit content?
Onlyfans’ move to cut out its most profitable content came on two fronts. On one hand, a BBC investigation revealed that the website’s moderation of illegal content was far from good enough. On the other hand, the platform was met with trouble from bank partners.
In a Financial Times article, CEO Tim Stokely revealed that the change in policy was due to banking. The Bank of New York Mellon, Metro Bank and JPMorgan Chase all refused the platform over fear of “reputational risk”.
Stokely said that banks are “particularly aggressive in closing accounts of sex workers” and companies that support them. As a result, the platform was going to be unable to pay workers on the service.

The Big Backpeddle
In a request Twitter post today, Onlyfans announced that it has secured the ability to pay content creators. The post looks to be treated a preliminary announcement to stop the crowds from migrating away to rival services.
The platform announced:
“We have secured assurances necessary to support our diverse creator community and have suspended the planned October 1 policy change. OnlyFans stands for inclusion and we will continue to provide a home for all creators. An official communication to creators will be emailed shortly.”

Onlyfans users aren't happy
After essentially throwing its largest content creators under the bus, the platform’s attempts to keep everyone isn't going well. Under today’s announcement, users are already expressing their disdain towards the website’s response.
One user said: “Ok but you’re back to calling us creators. You can call us sex workers. Or is this your subtle way of going back to ignoring us?” Another asked for a reduction in fees after losing 500 paying subscribers due to the platform’s decisions.
As Onlyfans has only described the planned policy change as being “suspended”, many are still unsure of their position on the platform. One person asked: “How are you gonna make it safe that if we stay on the site this is not gonna happen in the near future?”
