OnePlus has officially unveiled their OnePlus 9 series of phones. Combined in a single reveal event, both the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro have been revealed alongside their huge camera improvements.
“When we ask our fans what they want, one answer always stands out: a better camera,” said CEO Pete Lau. “We made the decision to partner with a legendary camera maker... every professional photographer knows their name: Hasselblad.”
OnePlus Hasselblad camera
OnePlus' camera improvements in their new line of smartphones is a massive improvement over their last effort. Partnering with space camera creators Hasselblad, the new camera system claims to provide users with the largest sensors available in a phone.
The main camera is powered by a 48-megapixel camera and backed by a 50-megapixel ultrawide sensor that's 320% larger than the iPhone 12 MAX ultrawide. There's also a 3.3x ultrawide zoom sensor, a macro camera, a monochrome camera and a 16-megapixel selfie camera. On the video front, users will be able to film in 8K 30fps or 4K 120fps.
To get the most out of the camera, OnePlus is including a wealth of features to push photography to its max. Videos are captured in DOL-HDR with the option of 12-bit RAW recording for filmmakers. There's even an overhauled nightscape setup for more accurate night-time photos and videos. Users will also be able to tweak tiny camera details using professional digital camera settings such as Focus Peeking.
OnePlus' reveal video showed off some truly gorgeous examples of photos and videos taken with both the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro. All taken by professional photographers, the camera is poised to be the best smartphone camera yet.
The base OnePlus 9 does seem to be missing some features. While the main Hasselblad camera sensors do stay, there's no mention of 4K 120fps video or the monochromatic sensor.
OnePlus 9 Pro display
The OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro display are incredibly similar. They both include a UHD+ resolution as well a 120Hz refresh rate. However, the Pro display benefits from an additional feature: Hyper Touch.
Hyper Touch is an adaptive sync feature that allows the OnePlus 9 Pro to change its refresh rate depending on what's happening on screen. To save on battery life, the OnePlus 9 Pro can automatically move from 1Hz to 120Hz on the fly. Furthermore, both OnePlus phones feature super resolution technology that automatically reconstructs video to higher resolutions.
The OnePlus 9 will include an OLED screen with 1100 Nits brightness at 120Hz. On the other hand, the Pro option has 1300 Nit brightness, 10-bit color depth and MEMC support.
OnePlus 9 Pro Specs
The 9 and 9 Pro phones both include the Snapdragon 888 5G SoC at their core. With 25% faster CPU and 35% faster GPU performance than last year's chip, it’s a gaming beast for Android gamers. To keep the chip cool, OnePlus has included a new Cool Play heat dissipation system on both phones to draw heat away from the screen.
For battery, both devices feature a 4500 mah cell that utilises the company's iconic Warp Charge feature. Both phones can charge to 65% in 15 minutes with it taking just 29 minutes to reach 100%. The phone also supports 50-watt Warp Charge that can get you to 100% battery in just 43 minutes. It even supports reverse wireless charging.
