Sony has officially announced the PS5 Slim and it's expected to be better in every way than the bulky original. With the Slim essentially improving on everything, Sony also announced that the original model would soon be phased out, in favor of the much-improved model.

The removal of older PS5 models was casually brought up by Sony during the Slim’s original announcement. No particular reason was given for the bigger model’s removal, as Sony simply stated that the Slim model would soon be the only version of this console available.

“Once inventory of the current PS5 model has sold out, the new PS5 will become the only model available,” Sony said on the PlayStation Blog.

Completely removing the original model is an interesting choice, especially since Sony is selling cover plates for that specific version. While the Slim will eventually have its own set of accessories ready for sale, the casual nature of this announcement is somewhat surprising.

Admittedly, the bigger model does make it difficult to find a place for it around most homes. Granted, players can put the system on its side, but that’s still a huge machine to place, so we’re sure many can’t wait to get their hands on the Slim.

Fans of the PlayStation know that this isn’t the first time Sony permanently replaced an older model with a much more stylish new one. The original PS3 was a bulky monster and was soon replaced by its similarly slimmer sibling, though at the expense of losing PS2 backward compatibility.

Thankfully, the PS5 Slim won’t be losing any of its essential features when it comes out this November. If anything, its smaller stature and improved storage space make it a much better version of Sony’s current-gen system.

Sony will release the PS5 Slim this November in North America, with plans to release it globally later on. The original model is readily available in gaming stores now, though it won’t stay that way for long.
