Is there a mute button on the PS5 controller?
Yes, there is a microphone mute button on the front of the PS5 controller. It's just underneath the 'PS' button, in between the two joysticks. Apparently, it will light up with a red/orange-ish colour if the controller mic has been muted.
If you're wondering how to use the PS5 mute button, as Sony explained on its FAQ page, "A short button press will mute or unmute the controller mic, as well as the mic on a wired headset or USB headset, while a long press will mute the mic input as well as all PS5 audio output from your connected TV, speakers, or headset."

How to mute PS5 controller microphone by default
If you don't fancy having to mute the mic every time you turn the console on, though, you might prefer to just mute it by default in your system settings - that way, it won't accidentally catch you out, but you can turn it back on when you want to.
According to GameRevolution, setting your PS5 mic to be muted automatically is pretty easy. They say, "To mute the PS5 mic by default, players must:
- Enter the PS5 Settings
- Select Sound
- Highlight 'Microphone Status When Logged In,' and select 'Mute.'"
If you do this, it will stop your microphone from automatically switching on every time the PS5 console powers up - and you can use the mute button on the controller whenever you do fancy turning it on. Much better!
