Are you a fan of Studio Ghibli’s poignant and colourful anime? What if there was a game based on them? Yes, we know all about Ni No Kuni, but what if you could play as Kiki from Kiki’s Delivery Service? Well, Mika and the Witch's Mountain from Chibig is probably as close as we’ll ever get.

In a Reddit thread showing footage of the upcoming game Mika and the Witch’s Mountain, one Reddit user noticed the similarities between the gameplay footage and Ghibli’s iconic 1989 movie. “Kiki's delivery service inspiration?” ‘legoace61’ asked. To which one of the game’s developers replied: “Yes! it's one of our favourite Ghibli movies.”

From the studio behind 2020’s Summer in Mara, Mika and the Witch's Mountain lets you play as an aspiring young witch who has to help the denizens of a small mountain village to complete her training. That very description alone is enough to start thought’s of a Kiki game flowing, but it doesn’t stop there.

Mika’s job is to fly around the game’s bright and colourful world on her broomstick, delivering packages, and getting to know the quirky townspeople - much like how Kiki did in the Studio Ghibli film. With Kiki’s Delivery Service being cited by the developers as a significant influence on the game, this is likely the closest we’ll ever get to a game based around Ghibli’s beloved animation without Miyazaki himself trying his hand at game development.

Chibig is an indie studio located in Valencia, Spain, and the Mika and the Witch's Mountain Steam page states a 2023 release date for the game, so hopefully it won’t be long before we’re role-playing as Kiki. Don’t judge me.
