Microsoft AI's plan to establish an AI technology hub in London, accompanied by a significant employment drive, underscores its commitment to invest in the United Kingdom’s AI economy. This move is poised to substantially impact the country's technological landscape.
After announcing the establishment of Microsoft AI last month, the tech giant has recently confirmed its plans to create its first AI hub in the United Kingdom’s capital city, London.
These plans were detailed by Mustafa Suleyman, Microsoft’s Executive Vice President for AI and former founding member of Inflection, in a blog post on Microsoft’s official website.
Mustafa Suleyman, Microsoft's Executive Vice President for AI and a former founding member of Inflection, has detailed the company's plans to entrust the leadership of the offshore AI hub in London to Jordan Hoffman. Hoffman, a pioneering figure in AI at DeepMind and Inflection, has been chosen to spearhead this strategic initiative.
In line with this, Suleyman said they’ll launch hiring opportunities in the “coming weeks and months” that will draw from what he described as “an enormous pool of AI talent and expertise” in the country.
Microsoft's commitment to the UK's AI economy is a long-term endeavour. The company's pledge, made late last year, to make a long-term investment in the area's AI economy is a testament to its dedication. Mustafa Suleyman, Microsoft's Executive Vice President for AI, also acknowledged the UK’s commitment to safely and responsibly develop the AI sector, a move that is expected to drive investment, innovation, and economic growth.
Suleyman stated that this is in line with the company’s AI goals, which led Microsoft to create the London AI hub.
Lastly, Suleyman reiterated the company’s commitment to invest £2.5 billion (around $3.2 million) in improving the AI workforce and establishing the needed infrastructure, including 20,000 units of the most advanced AI training GPUs, in the UK in the next three years.
Microsoft launched the Microsoft AI subsidiary in mid-March with an announcement that Suleyman and Karen Simonyan will head the new division as EVP and Chief Scientist, respectively. Simonyan had also served alongside Suleyman in Inflection in the same capacity.
