The ongoing wave of newer, more dangerous cyberattacks are not dying down. As massive attacks continue to dig at major tech companies, Microsoft has come out to warn the public that hundreds of companies are on the defence.
Reported by Reuters, the latest round of attacks is being conducted by Russian hacking agency SolarWinds. The group was also responsible for a massive wave of cyberattacks last year that targeted hundreds of organisations.
Microsoft: Who is SolarWinds targeting?
Microsoft revealed that the SolarWinds hacking group is currently targeting very select businesses. The latest wave of cyberattacks are expressly targeting āresellers and other technology service providersā of cloud services.
The company explained:
āThis recent activity is another indicator that Russia is trying to gain long-term, systematic access to a variety of points in the technology supply chain and establish a mechanism for surveilling ā now or in the future ā targets of interest to the Russian government.ā
The company also revealed that they have managed to block most of the attacks. Between July 1 and Oct. 19, Microsoft noticed that 609 customers had been successfully attacked by SolarWinds. The company has since informed every attacked customer.
While specific numbers weren't released, the company revealed that only a small percentage of hacks were successful. Additionally, SolarWinds is targeting other US companies and organisations outside of MS.

Couldāve been prevented
After the attacks were revealed, United States officials claimed that it could've been prevented. Officials claimed that run-of-the-mill preventative measures would've resulted in every attack being unsuccessful.
They said:
āUnsophisticated, run-of-the mill operations that could have been prevented if the cloud service providers had implemented baseline cybersecurity practices.ā
