Konami’s Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 should have been an easy slam dunk for the company, especially on Steam Deck. Unfortunately, aside from the ports being basic and unimpressive, they’re also broken on Steam Deck, as the PS2 entries are extraordinarily buggy.
A report from Gaming on Linux has confirmed that Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater are broken on Valve’s handheld computer. No matter what adjustments were made, both games would start, and get into the menu, before exiting to the Steam library.
Both entries also have broken videos, as the intro for either title will result in no audio or distorted sounds. Considering how these are just upgraded PS3 ports, seeing them suffer on the Deck is pretty embarrassing, especially since the PS1 original is the only working port.
Right now, fans of these games are better off getting the console ports of Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1. Even the Nintendo Switch port is doing better, as those games can actually be played, despite having their own flaws on the system. Seeing MGS2 and MGS3 stuck in 30fps is disappointing, but at least Nintendo fans can play them.
While the Steam Deck is a pretty powerful system, it’s still prone to a number of flaws that the devs might not notice right away. Verified titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered and Miles Morales were prone to crashing before a recent Steam Deck update fixed things.
It’s a disappointing start to the Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection, especially since Konami did a stellar job with previous collections. The Castlevania, Castlevania Advance, and Contra collections are beloved by fans. With a second volume likely collecting Metal Gear Solid 4, the first time this title has been ported outside of PS3, this first entry doesn’t inspire hope.

Fans can purchase Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 right now on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Each game can also be purchased individually, for those only craving MGS2 or MGS3, just not on Steam Deck, unfortunately.
