Mark Zuckerberg will finally testify on the Cambridge Analytica scandal

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, has agreed to testify in a lawsuit over Facebook’s Cambridge Analytica from 2018. Zuckerberg will be deposed for six hours in September, according to the filing that took place last Tuesday. The Meta CEO won’t be the only one involved, as several employees who work and used to work for Meta will also give testimonies.

Zuckerberg testifies but will he take a stand?

Joining Mark Zuckerberg for the testimonies are current COO Sheryl Sandberg, who is leaving this Fall, and Meta's chief growth officer Javier Olivan, who takes over as COO once Sandberg leaves. Despite the testimonies, all depositions will be taken privately so it’s not yet clear if we’ll see Zuckerberg and his employees in court.

Since this is a civil case, Zuckerberg will be under oath while under deposition with someone transcribing everything the CEO says. Any time the company’s CEO has to give their account on events, it’s usually pretty serious. Robert Frenchman, a partner at the New York law firm Mukasey Frenchman, says time limits in depositions are unusual but getting important people like this to testify is for the good of everyone.

“Plaintiffs savor the opportunity to cross-examine C-suite executives, and they’ll have free rein on a broad range of topics. For the corporate defendant, there is far more to lose than gain,” Frenchman told The Guardian.

The story so far

Facebook has been sued over the data breach, which may have resulted in Cambridge Analytica misusing the data for personal gain. To those unaware, Cambridge Analytica partnered up with former President Donald Trump’s campaign at the time and is being sued due to the data possibly helping Trump during the 2016 election.

As of this writing, the case revolving around the Facebook Cambridge Analytica scandal is still ongoing. Mark Zuckerberg’s testimony is pretty big but that’s not an indication that this case is going to end up anytime soon.
