Bungie’s upcoming Marathon reboot seems to be in good hands, as the developer has finally found its Gameplay Design Director. Andrew Witts, best known for his work on Rainbow Six Siege, Halo, and Fortnite, will now lead the charge as the FPS game races towards its as-yet undefined release date.

Witts announced the news on Twitter, revealing that he’s already completed his first week. So far, the response has been an outpouring of support for the move, and it’s pretty easy to see why.

We don’t know how the new Marathon will play aside from a sub-two minute cinematic teaser, but Witt’s experience as Halo Infinite’s multiplayer modes and systems lead is worth its weight in gold when shaping the sci-fi romp. Pair that with more than a year working on Fortnite and two years on Guild Wars 2’s character movement and combat mechanics, and it’s certainly shaping up nicely.

The most exciting thought for us, however, is the experience that Witts brings from his time as the original gameplay designer on Rainbow Six Siege, and that’s not just because Siege.gg is our sister site. Ubisoft’s tactical shooter is one of the most unique FPS games of the past decade, and Witts helped test core gameplay mechanics like its iconic destruction system and worked closely with pro gamers to finetune the sandbox environments.

Naturally, Siege has changed a lot since Witts left before its release eight years ago and Marathon seems like a much faster-paced game if the energetic synthwave soundtrack is any indication, but it could help Bungie’s newcomer stand out from the crowd.

Although Sony owns Bungie, the new Marathon game will be released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X / S, and PC with cross-play and cross-save. The developer is keeping tight-lipped on a release date, but we’re guessing somewhere in 2025 if we’re lucky.
