Not long after the failure of Gollum, we’re now getting The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria this Fall, and fans aren’t impressed. While the announcement trailer lays out the gameplay loop decently enough, many aren’t impressed and are still burned by Smeagol’s baffling video game.
After the trailer was shared on the PS5 subreddit, many fans didn’t share their enthusiasm for another licensed LOTR game. Some fans are into the Valheim-like gameplay loop but the bad visuals are leaving a bad taste in their mouths.
“Someone needs to take away the LOTR IP from Embracer,” one comment reads. “You guys can think a tower defense game is fun but it’s a horrible use of an amazing IP. Either do a Shadow of Mordor style or the old PS2 style of games of co op. F**king Christ. Two duds back to back.”
“Is there a reason they're not doing any AAA games with this property? Like it seems so obvious, yet it's been 6 years since Shadow of War and nothing,” chimed in thechort7.
“The LOTR IP is super expensive and they are notorious for not wanting anyone to use it. Why the hell did we get Gollum and now this?” said TheYear3022.
Maybe we’ll be proven wrong and The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria will be a good game but this doesn’t get our hopes up. Granted, not everything can be Shadow of War or Shadow of Mordor but they can do better than this. The gameplay better hold up because it looks like this won’t make a great first impression.
Ever since Embracer Games announced that they would be releasing more LOTR games, things haven’t looked good. Gollum was delayed a few times and still ended up being a bad game. There was also a mobile game announced not too long ago and that just says it all, doesn’t it?
