Superheroes are icons for the world to look up to. In a world filled with violence and bigotry, the likes of Superman are there to guide readers towards goodness. However, there's one thing that superheroes can never, ever do: perform oral sex on a woman. (According to DC.)
For season three of the DC animated show Harley Quinn, Batman was going to get his – and another's – lips wet. Unfortunately for Bruce Wayne, certain executives stepped in to put him back in his place as a sexless cosplayer.
DC on oral sex
In an interview with Variety, Harley Quinn co-creator Justin Halpern revealed that DC blocked a Batman sex scene. In the scene, Batman was going down on Catwoman, but the scene was shot down. As for why the scene was cut, executives claimed that “heroes don't do that.”
“It’s incredibly gratifying and free to be using characters that are considered villains because you just have so much more leeway. A perfect example of that is in this third season of Harley [when] we had a moment where Batman was going down on Catwoman. And DC was like, ‘You can’t do that. You absolutely cannot do that.’ They’re like, ‘Heroes don’t do that.’”
Halpern asked the executives whether superheroes are all selfish in the bedroom. Of course, the answer came down to profit margins. He explained:
“So, we said, ‘Are you saying heroes are just selfish lovers?’ They were like, ‘No, it’s that we sell consumer toys for heroes. It’s hard to sell a toy if Batman is also going down on someone.’”
Harley Quinn is still the same
Despite the actions of DC regarding Batman’s night of passion, the Harley Quinn show hasn't been changed in any other ways. Halpern explains that the company is “remarkably supportive" of the adult animated show.
Halpern’s show has pushed the boundaries of iconic DC characters multiple times, always hunting for jokes. For example, the show's version of The Joker is a pathetic version of the Crown Prince of Crime. Nevertheless, the show isn't supposed to be taken seriously so it’s all for the sake of entertainment.
Harley Quinn Season 3 is currently in production. There's no scheduled release date.
