Indie games are where you can find a lot of experimental, cool takes on classic genres, and this one I ran into has a neat added bonus: it’s completely free. If you wanted to try a first-person melee action game with a very flashy comic book-like aesthetic, Hyperfirst is your jam.
The game is a student project made by a member of the DigiPen Institute of Technology. In fact, they have a publisher page on Steam that showcases all their student projects. All free to download and try out.
Hyperfirst is undeniably one of their most popular projects, with over 100 user reviews and a Very Positive score among users. The game draws clear inspiration from the likes of Jet Set Radio, with its colorful aesthetic, as well as a bit of Devil May Cry with a style meter that incentivizes you to go for stylish combos.
The game is not particularly long, with only three levels available. That being said, it’s a nice proof of concept for a potential fleshed-out experience.
I personally love seeing passion projects like this get some traction, especially if they come from developers who are currently honing their craft.
