How to stop your TV or monitor switching on every time you dock your Nintendo Switch

The Nintendo Switch has been out for just over three-and-a-half years now.

That time has flown by and the console has gone from strength to strength with a constant slew of impressive games and the fantastic indie support.

However, it's not a perfect machine. When compared to the current-gen consoles it's underpowered, and that's not even considering the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

There are some smaller annoyance too though, things like how your Switch always takes control of your TV.

Why does your Switch automatically control the TV?

The thing about this feature is that it's actually quite useful when you want it to work, but infuriating when you don't want it to.

The reason that this happens is because of a feature called HDMI CEC, a fancy feature which a lot of TVs have.

This makes your Switch a little more intelligent and it'll match your TV when in the dock, which is what causes it to change the input.

Sometimes you just want to put your Switch back though, and not worry about accidentally interrupting the TV show you were watching or someone else's game.

If this has become the bane of your indoor life, then the good news is that you can turn it off and it's actually very easy to do.

To do so, you need to do this:

  • Select Settings from the home screen
  • Select TV Settings
  • Select Match TV Power State and turn it off
  • That's it, we told you it would be easy

Once that's done you'll no longer have to deal with your Switch barging onto your TV just because you had the audacity to put it back in the dock.
