How to set a default payment card for Apple Pay

Apple Pay is Apple's built-in payment method for goods and services. Used across iOS and MacOS, this feature makes it easier to purchase things across the Apple ecosystem. Despite being designed for ease of use, the feature may still confuse on its initial setup.

Furthermore, this service can be used as a hassle-free method of contactless payment that cuts out the need for cash. With cashless payments becoming necessary in recent times, it's important to know how to set up this payment method on your iOS device.

If you own either a Mac, an iPhone/iPad or an Apple Watch, you can utilize the Apple Pay feature. However, you'll need to make sure you have a default card set up or that you funds in your account balance. Before you can use the feature, there are a couple of steps you'll need to go through.

Set a default payment card for Apple Pay on your iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch device

If you want to set your default payment card for Apple Pay through your iPhone or iPad, you'll need to first open your Settings app. Once there, select Wallet and then Apple Pay. In the Transaction Defaults settings, tap Default Card. This will then let you input your card details.

The Apple Watch does require the use an additional device to use this feature. Firstly, open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone or iPad. Then, click the My Watch tab. Select Wallet and Apple Pay and choose Default Card. Just like with the larger iOS devices, you'll be able to input your card details and select which card you want to pay with.

Set a default payment card for Apple Pay on your Mac

If you own a MacBook device with a Touch ID sensor, you'll be able to set your default payment card on your Apple device. Thankfully, setting up the payment method this way is incredibly simple. Just follow these steps:

Navigate to your System Preferences and select the Wallet and Apple Pay option. Inside this option, you'll be able to set the default payment card tab. Clicking on this will allow you to fill in your card details and save them to your MacBook.

Take note that you should always double-check all the information that you’re typing in, such as the account, sort code and CVV numbers.
