How to give a new Steam game as a gift
If you're in a position where you can buy a gift for a friend, then that's lovely, and you're a good person for doing so. Whether it's the hottest new game, or simply a classic game like Terraria, sometimes buying things for others is nice.
If you're ready to be a digital Father Christmas, then here's what you've got to do:
- Go to the store page for the game you want to buy for them
- Add it to your cart
- Select Purchase as a gift
- Choose your friend from your Steam friends list
- Fill out the customised message, you can make this as serious or silly as you want
- Finish actually buying it
Once that's all done, your friend will be able to claim the game and install it.

How to manage your gifts on Steam
You will occasionally come into possession of extra games on Steam. We had this happen without realising, and aren't entirely sure how.
Sometimes these will come via special offers, other times it could be for other reasons. Either way though, you can find out by doing this:
- Open up the Steam launcher
- Click Games
- Click Manage gifts and guest passes
Here you'll see a list of duplicate games that you own. You can then send these to people by selecting them and choosing the friend, filling in the message, and hitting send.
