If you're a regular user of Discord, you are probably already familiar with Voice channels - but what can you do when you experience a Discord stream no sound problem? If you're trying to stream on Discord, but no audio is coming through, the people watching lose a significant part of the experience.

There are some potential solutions available if you find yourself in this situation. We'll explain what these are, and hopefully, your sound will soon be back to normal.

How To Fix Discord Stream No Sound Issues

We'll assume you've already checked your audio settings on your computer, to make sure you haven't accidentally muted yourself, or turned the volume down to zero.

And we'll also assume that you've tested other apps to identify whether the issue is Discord-specific, or a more general problem. Assuming it's specific to Discord, here's what we suggest you try.

Run Discord as an Administrator

Giving Discord administrator privileges will make sure that it isn't being blocked from accessing your audio feed. To do this:

  • Find the Discord.exe file.
  • Right-click on this, and select Properties.
  • In the window that appears, click the Compatibility tab.
  • Under Settings, check the box marked Run this program as an administrator.
  • Press Ok, and relaunch Discord to see if the issue is resolved.

Run Your Game in Windowed Mode

Historically, Discord has sometimes had problems with games that are being streamed in fullscreen mode.

Try changing the settings to run the game in a window instead, and see if your audio starts working again.

Make Sure Your Audio Drivers Are Updated

It's worth making sure that your audio drivers are fully up-to-date:

  • Open Device Manager, and go to Sound, video and game controllers.
  • Find your primary sound driver, right-click on it and choose Update driver.
  • A new window will open. Select Search automatically for drivers.
  • Next, click on Search for updated drivers on Windows update.
  • If the Windows update finds that an update is available, select Download and install, and wait for the process to complete.

Update Your Activity Status

Sometimes, Discord may fail to automatically detect that you are playing a game. In turn, this may stop it from detecting your audio. It is possible that manually updating your activity status can resolve this:

  • Click on the Settings icon next to your Discord name.
  • Go to Activity Status.
  • Under No game detected, click on Add it!
  • Select the app you want to stream in the dropdown menu, then click on Add Game.

Reset Discord Voice Settings

Doing this will revert all your Discord settings to their defaults. This is worth trying in case you have made any changes to your audio settings.

  • Open Discord settings.

  • At the bottom of the settings menu, click on Reset Voice Settings.

Any changes you have made (deliberately or inadvertently) will be wiped.

Change Discord Voice Settings

It's possible that you will need to manually change some settings to restore your audio. Discord is set up to automatically detect your voice. But sometimes this system doesn't work perfectly when you are trying to stream audio. There are several audio features you may want to manually turn off:

  • Open the Discord Settings menu.
  • Select Voice and Video.
  • Under Input Mode, select Push to Talk.
  • If you're using the desktop app, disable OpenH264 Video Codec.
  • You can also go to Voice Processing and deselect Advanced Voice Activity, and Automatic Gain Control.
  • Under Quality of Service, deactivate Enable Quality of Service High Packet Priority.
  • Finally, under Screen Share, deselect Use an experimental method to capture audio from applications.

This removes many of the features that might be causing a conflict.

Reinstall Discord

If you've tried everything we've suggested, and you are still having no joy, then it's time to press the metaphorical big red button, and uninstall, then reinstall Discord.

This can be an effective way of removing any bugs or glitches that have crept in, so it's well worth trying.

The Discord Support team is aware of some audio capture issues, especially via Chrome. They are currently gathering data to try to find a fix. So if you are still having issues, contact them and provide as much information as possible.

Hopefully, your audio problems will be a thing of the past. But if not, we can hope that the Discord team will soon find a solution for everyone.
