How to connect a new PS4 controller to your PlayStation 4 console

You've bought yourself a new PS4 controller, maybe it's especially fancy and comes with paddles, an egg timer, and a small toaster oven.

Maybe it's just a good old-fashioned PS4 controller, no pretences whatsoever, just a reliable new controller to help you see the console through to the end of its days, or a spare one to give your dribbling toddler.

Now that you've got the new controller, the next step is to make sure it works with your PS4, and that you're not messing up next-door's game of Tekken.

So, here's how to connect a new PS4 controller to your PS4.

How to connect a new PS4 controller

Good news for all, this isn't a hard thing to do. It's as simple as getting the USB charging cable and connecting one end to the PS4, and the other to the PS4 controller.

That's all you have to do. Make sure you let the controller fully charge before disconnecting it and then you're free to wander about your house to test the range on it.

If you ever have issues with your current controllers then charging them is often the answer, so always try that before you do anything else. That being said, there are fixes if things go awry too.

How to fix connection issues on your PS4 controller

Double-check the controller is actually charged. That's the first port of call here. After that, and if it doesn't work, you can try repairing your controller.

Just go to Settings, Devices, Bluetooth Devices, and then select the controller, and choose Forget Device. You can then reconnect it via the USB cable and it will hopefully work.

These issues are likely to only affect wireless play, so don't worry too much if you're happy to play with a wired controller anyway. You can even get some nice long USB cables if you're happy to go third-party.
