The PS5 is a somewhat known quantity at this point. We've had a lot of information so far, including the reveal of the PS5 console design and the DualSense controller, but one of the key things we're missing is about pricing.
It's not just the console price that's a mystery in that sense either; we don't even know how much the average PS5 game will cost.
So, we thought we'd do some research and see what we came up with. Here's how much we think a PS5 game will cost...
How to predict how much a PS5 game will cost?
It's fairly likely that there won't be much of a shift from the current PS4 prices. Now, given sales, undercutting, and scalpers, a normal RRP price for a game is not always an easy thing to find.
On PS4, new games generally cost £54.99 or £59.99. Ultimately, prices for big games haven't changed in a long time, so the standard is around £60 for a new title. But that could be about to sneak upwards slightly...
How much will a PS5 game cost?
Setting an interesting precedent, publisher 2K has announced that the next-gen version of NBA 2K21 will cost more than the current-gen version. It will be £59.99 for the PS4 version of the Standard Edition game, but the PS5 version of the very same thing would set you back £64.99.
There's no guarantee that every other company will follow suit, of course.
In an earnings call, Ubisoft's CEO, Yves Guillemot clarified that the company would not be raising its price points for next-gen gaming,
According to Jason Schreier, when asked about next-gen pricing, Ubisoft stated that "we are concentrating on the Christmas releases. We have decided those games will be launched at $60."
However, the wording of this response suggests that as Ubisoft move away from supporting current-gen consoles, they may increase game prices in line with 2K and other publishers.
But the main issue isn't that games shouldn't be costing more. In fact, they probably should, thanks to things like inflation. But increasing the price could result in fewer sales - this is one of the reasons DLC, battle passes, and micro-transactions are so prevalent.
So, PS5 games will probably be £60 to £65, but you can expect to keep seeing additional costs unless something happens to the average price of ALL games.
