The PlayStation 5 is finally here! After what seems like forever, gamers can now enjoy the next-gen console experience with either a new PlayStation or Xbox Series X.

If you're trying to set up your PlayStation 5 still, you'll need to be getting yourself familiar with the PS5's HDMI ports, which are also seeing a slight upgrade from the PlayStation 4.

So, how many HDMI ports does the PS5 have, and what's the fabled HDMI 2.1?

How many HDMI ports will the PS5 have?

As with the PS4 and most other consoles, the PlayStation 5 only has one HDMI port, located on the back aside the two USB ports, an ethernet port, and the power supply port.

This is unsurprising, given that you'd only really want to plug your PS5 into one TV or monitor.

The main difference between the PS4 and PS5 HDMI is that the next-gen console supports HDMI 2.1 cables. If you're worried about needing to rush out and buy a new HDMI cable, fear not as the PS5 comes with its own bespoke HDMI 2.1 cable.

What is HDMI 2.1?

HDMI 2.1 is the most recent innovation in the HDMI space, that both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X include. It basically allows for a far more impressive transfer of data (the PS5 has a bandwidth of 48GB/s), which in turn allows for a much better picture.

Your TV will likely have an HDMI 2.0 port, which might make you wonder if it'll work with the new consoles. The good news is that HDMI is backwards compatible, which means it'll work fine with your current TV.

The bad news is that you won't be able to see the consoles at their best, but it's almost certainly better to wait until TVs that have the new HDMI ports are cheaper first, anyway.
