Launch sales of Harry Potter RPG Hogwarts Legacy are staggering, managing to outsell both Elden Ring and Red Dead Redemption 2. Despite the controversy surrounding author J.K. Rowling, fans of the franchise have supported the game in droves.
Christopher Dring of GamesIndustry.biz revealed that the Harry Potter RPG’s opening week was 56% bigger than Elden Ring. For context, Elden Ring sold a million copies in that period and was one of the most bought games in 2022 overall.
Apparently, Hogwarts Legacy is the biggest game launch in Europe since Red Dead Redemption 2 which isn’t FIFA or Call of Duty. While the wizard school simulator can’t beat those annual franchises, this is still a big deal for the publisher, as it could mean more follow-ups in the future.
Hogwarts Legacy has been breaking records before it was even released. It was able to become the most-bought game on Steam at one point, only being beaten by Steam Deck purchases. This isn’t even counting how well the game has sold on individual systems.
We wouldn’t be surprised if the game receives another boost in sales when the last-gen version comes out. Additionally, an even later port of the game is coming to Nintendo Switch. Considering the popularity of Nintendo’s console, this could give the game even more of a sales boost.
Unfortunately, the game’s success also means that J.K. Rowling will benefit. Since Rowling is the creator she could get paid but it’s hard to feel good about that when she constantly makes the lives of trans people harder. The creator’s fans have even mocked trans activists by showing them the game's good scores and sales.
